hi there im joe i work for bmw as a technition you may have a thermostat housing leak but may not nessasarily notice water underneath the car they are quite common on the mini's done one on mine not long ago one way to check is look at the bottom of the gearbox see if any coolant residue there as not easily seen from the top or carry out a pressure test on the coolant system. if it is a stat replace the housing and thermostat .

Thermostat housings are more a problem with the 05/06 minis. it could be a number of things but my money (without looking) would be the Radiator they corrode in the bottom n/s and can be seen by a wet patch when looking between radiator and front bumper (easier without air con) or if you can safley jac it up remove the small undertray and you can get a good view of the radiator from there.

hope this helps
